We are here to introduce you to various information sources and products that can hopefully help you to control your ADHD and its symptoms.
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that mainly affects people’s concentration and ability to focus on tasks. What makes it different to ADD is the “Hyperactivity”. It is thought that up to 10% of children (of school age) could suffer from the condition and boys are 3 times more likely to be sufferers than girls. The nature of the condition makes it difficult to diagnose adhd as children are often impulsive, unfocused and generally hyperactive. A clearer sign to a professional would be a child that shows these symptoms over a prolonged period of time.
The following are some of the most common symptoms that are noticeable in sufferers:-
- difficult to remain seated
- excessive climbing
- difficulty playing quietly
- talking too much
- an inability to be patient
- unacceptably interrupting
- problems with prolonged attention at play time or school work
- issues with listening
- hard to follow instructions
- avoiding tasks that involve a lot of thinking
- easily distracted
It is important to note that although these behaviours are also associated with children being ‘naughty’, the child is not deliberately misbehaving or being awkward.
You may have heard that ADHD is caused by poor parenting, drugs or even too much sugar. This is completely false. The cause are not yet fully understood but it is known to be a biological problem that could be caused by genetics or even environmental issues. Other causes that have been linked to an increased incidence level are:-
- Smoking as a pregnant mother
- Premature delivery
- Injuries at birth and low birth weight
Contrary to what you may have read in other places – ADHD is not curable. At least there is currently no medication or process that has been proven effective in curing the condition. With that said, there are many different medications on the market that claim to reduce symptoms and help the sufferer manage their lives comfortably. Whilst most of the prescription based medications are stimulants, there are also other options that are becoming popular.
